Intro into Massachusetts

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts was created as a sovereign state in New England in the late 1700s. The Commonwealth has no geographic or cultural purpose that distinguishes it from another state in the U.S. Massachusetts has been significant throughout American history, as Plymouth was the second permanent English settlement in North America. Many of Massachusetts's towns were founded by colonists from England in the 1620s and 1630s and it was here where the ‘May Flower’ was destined for. During the eighteenth century, Boston the biggest city in Massachusetts became known as the "Cradle of Liberty", as the famous ‘Boston Tea Party’ happened here, that led to the American Revolution and the independence of the United States from Great Britain.

is bordered by Rhode Island and Connecticut to the south, New York to the west, and Vermont and New Hampshire to the north. The majority of the state’s population lives in the Boston metropolitan area and Massachusetts is the most populous of the six New England states and ranks third among U.S. states in terms of GDP per capita.

Originally Massachusetts was depended on fishing and agriculture, but during the Industrial Revolution this changed and today it’s one of the top areas for higher education and high technology. The ivy schools of Harvard and Cambridge are located in the state. Also, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is located in Boston and this institution is considered to be one of the top institutions in the U.S.

Thousands of Irish immigrated to Boston during the 19th and 20th centuries and today Boston is home to one of the biggest Irish communities outside of Ireland. The St. Patrick’s Day parade is an event you don’t want to miss, as the cities Irish pubs are partying for days. If you do go to Boston you should check out a Boston Red Sox game or Bruins game. The Red Sox play in the Major League Baseball (MBL) and the Boston Bruins play in the National Hockey League (NHL) and both teams have a proud history.
