Introduction to Louisiana

Louisiana is located in the southern states and its coastline runs along the Gulf of Mexico and its Mississippi Valley is one of the most beautiful areas in the U.S. The state’s capital is Baton Rouge and largest city is New Orleans, which is also known as the 'Big Easy'. Louisiana is the only state in the U.S. with political subdivisions termed parishes, which are local government’s equivalent to counties. The largest parish by population is Jefferson Parish, and the largest by land area is Cameron Parish

Louisiana State was once a French and Spanish colony and because of this there is a strong multicultural and multilingual heritage in the state. In the 18th century Louisiana was one of the biggest ports for the importing of African slaves and today there is a strong African influence in the state.

New Orleans is the largest city
in the state and is one of the country’s biggest tourist destinations. It’s known as being home to Louis Armstrong and Dixieland Jazz, which has attracts some of the biggest festivals and the cuisine is one of the best in the U.S. The biggest tourist attraction in Louisiana is the French Quarter, which is very unique and a must see.
