Intro into Vietnam

The movie 'Good Morning Vietnam' brought Vietnam to Hollywood in 1987 with its hit staring Robin Williams. The country was well known for its history when the Americans sent troops in to help fight the north Vietcong during the Vietnam War. The movie 'Good Morning Vietnam' was about the Americans serving during the war. The Communist north won the war and Hanoi, its capital is one of the world’s last surviving one-party Communist states in the world.

Today, Socialist Republic of Vietnam shares its borders to the north with the People’s Republic of China and to the west with Laos and Cambodia. The country is long and thin and it has over 3000km of coastline. At its narrowest point it’s a mere 55km wide. The country is well known for its recent history when the Americans sent troops in to help fight the north Vietcong during the Vietnam War. The Communist north won the war and Hanoi, its capital is one of the world’s last surviving one-party Communist states.

It’s only been in recent years that Vietnam has seen its economy grow and tourists are flocking here to see its wonderful beaches and colourful history. Statistics showed that in 2005 the country attracted more than 3.5 million visitors and growing. This country should be a must for any traveller going to Southeast Asia, as it has so much to over and the people are warm and friendly. When you are in Ho Chi Minh it’s best to go to the Tourist Information Centre in District 1, as it's a great place to pick up a free map (which includes a map of Hanoi, as well) and get an idea of what the city and surrounding area
