Russia is the biggest country in the world and it covers more than 17million square kilometers. It has 10 time zones and if you were to drive it, it would take you 1 week to do so. If you were to fly it would take you 10 hours. The country has a population of around 151 million, of which eighty percent is Russian (Slav). More than 100 nationalities speak their own languages, although everyone knows Russian. Sixty percent of Russians are atheist, while the majority of believers are Orthodox.
Russia has the largest river in Europe, the Volga, the world’s largest lake, the Caspian Sea, the world’s deepest freshwater lake, the famous Baikal, which is 636km long and 80km wide, and also Europe’s highest peak, Mount Elbrus.
Since the collapse of the Communism in the late 80’s and early 90’s, Russia has seen a slow growth. Today, you have a country that has a huge gap between the rich and the poor. Russia is a beautiful country and has a fascinating history, but as visa’s being so hard to get and that I found out first hand that it is still not the safest country in the world. I personally don’t recommend Russia just yet. I would first give it a few years to sort out its internal problems and when they do it will become more of a popular destination among travelers.
